This course was focused on the backgrounds of students and families within the education system. Students were able to analyze the learning environments, which would most benefit students from diverse populations. There was an emphasis on the consideration of the historical relationships between school and home to better understand the politics, social problems, and policies that these families have experienced.

Physical Bases of Coaching

This course explored the principles of anatomy, biomechanics, and physiology aspects of the human body in relation to athletes. This class focused on each facet of the body allowing coaches to be better equipped to strength train and condition their teams. Students were also able to build their own program while also addressing concerns like injury prevention and helping athletes get physically prepared for their respective seasons.

Pyschosocial Bases of Coaching
Dr. Andrew Driska

This course focused on the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of the athlete and how to structure practices to get the most out of athletes each day. Students in the course participated in a project where they observed a coach and analyzed the coaches positive and negative behaviors. From this students were able to reflect on their observations and work to understand the psychological, developmental and instructional strategies for coaching.

Concept of Educational Inquiry

This course provided the foundational concepts that helped to create the MAED program. ED 800 addresses the role of the learner, the teacher, the process of inquiry, the role of technology, observation and research. To examine and create our own teaching philosophy we analyzed the works of Vivian Paley, Howard Gardner and John Dewey. Our focus was on best practices.

Leadership and Organizational Development

This course focused on the roles and responsibilities of school leaders as they address challenges that schools face today and in the future. By examining and analayzing these challenges, we were able to formulate our own ideas of what it means to be a leader in our own roles in education. This course was designed for both positional leaders, such as principals and department heads, and leaders without titles, such as teacher leaders and community leaders.

Safety and Injury Control

In this course, students were able to explore safety and injury in sports. Students were able to look at this from multiple perspectives including, the schools facilities, the administration, the abilities of a single player and being able to determine the risks associated with each. Students also learned to assess and manage various situations where athletes may be injured and how to handle/prepare to be ready to act.

Case Studies in Educational Leadership
Dr. BetsAnne Smith

This course explored educational leadership through a variety of cases. Students were able to choose cases that reflected their educational disciplines as some leadership aspects are interdisciplinary. This class provided a foundation on the principles of transformative leadership. At the end of the course, students created a professional reflection where they create their own educational leadership philosophy.

Concpet of a Learning Society

This course was focused on the "Learning Society" where students focused on the role of technology in the learning process for education. The goal of this course was for students to explore the meaning of the learning society and the problems with the phrase, observe the activities of the learning society and to look at the experiences of those that currently work in this society. Students will use various materials, such as online exhibits, videos, websites, and readings to analyze what the learning society means.

This course has helped me reflect on my adventures through the MAED program. It has allowed me to observe my own practices as an educator. By developing an online portfolio, I have created a professional presence where others can see examples of my growth and learning through the shared artifacts.

Skill Development in Athletes

In this course, students were introduced to an approach on how to develop the best practices in developing skills in athletes. One of the constraints that coaches face is the age difference in athletes. Therefore, there was a focus on developing age appropriate approaches and learning ways to manipulate these approaches to benefit the athletes.With this focus on the athletes, coaches will be able to strengthen team success through this course.
